Designing an Am-Be miniature neutron source
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Miniature neutron sources with high neutron flux have abundant applications in medicine, industry and researches. The most important general characteristic of miniature neutron sources is their diameter which is 3mm in average. In this research, we have surveyed and designed an Am-Be miniature neutron source fabrication. Materials and Methods: This investigation resulted in creation of an Am-Be neutron source, using beryllium metal powder with 98% carat and 100-200 |µm mesh and Americium source with activity of about 200 |µCi. Neutron source designing was performed under safety and protective factors. The system was designed in two different forms based on the fluent yield of neutron or cut off neutron yield. Results: The mean neutron flux of miniature neutron source was measured as 1.14 (n/sec.cm2), and it was calculated as 2.56 (n/sec.cm2) by MCNP (4C) code. Due to purity and mesh of beryllium, which were not calculated by MCNP code, the calculated flux via Monte Carlo method was approximately 2 times larger than neutron flux from fabricated miniature neutron sources. Conclusion: In order to fabricate the miniature neutron sources Am- Be with high efficiency, the americium sources with high activity and the target material (Be) in different forms are required.

full textCharacterization of Am-Be neutron source based PGNAA setup using aqueous solutions of Chlorine and Boron
Background: A 5 Ci 241Am-Be radio isotopic neutron source-based prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) setup was designed for estimation of minimum detectable concentration (MDC) of elements in aqueous solutions. Materials and Methods: Performance variables related to PGNAA setup (source to sample distance, sample to detector distance and volume of water) were optimized experimentally...
full textTagging fast neutrons from an (241)Am/(9)Be source.
Shielding, coincidence, and time-of-flight measurement techniques are employed to tag fast neutrons emitted from an (241)Am/(9)Be source resulting in a continuous polychromatic energy-tagged beam of neutrons with energies up to 7MeV. The measured energy structure of the beam agrees qualitatively with both previous measurements and theoretical calculations.
full textUtilization of Am-Be Neutron Source in PGNAA Setup Used in Cement Raw Material Analysis
Hundreds of cement factories use online bulk material analyzers to improve their quality control for both raw material and kiln feed, and reduce their variability. The most used technology for online analysis is Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA), with Cf as the neutron source. Cost and short half-life of the Cf neutron sources are the main problems in cement industry. Therefore, ...

The k(0)-standardization method on the (241)Am-Be isotopic neutron source has been studied and developed. In this paper, the characteristics of the neutron spectrum in an isotropic neutron field of (241)Am-Be isotopic neutron sources was experimentally determined by dual monitor method using measured cadmium ratios of (197)Au(n, γ)(198)Au and (98)Mo(n, γ)(99)Mo(β(-))(99m)Tc reactions. Applicati...
full textExperimental and Monte Carlo studies on the response of CR-39 detectors to Am-Be neutron spectrum
Background: The Poly-Allyl Diglycol Carbonate (PADC) detector is of particular interest for development of a fast neutron dosimeter. Fast neutrons interact with the constituents of the CR-39 detector and produce H, C and O recoils, as well as (n, α) reaction. These neutron- induced charged particles contribute towards the response of CR-39 detectors. Material and Methods: Electrochemical...
